Winery Notes - "Slightly pink in color (ramato style) after letting the grapes soak in the free-run juice for 20 hours before pressing the juice off and fermenting. The nose is fine, with delicate notes of crushed flowers, sweet red berries, peach and a hint of citrus fruit. On the palate it is fresh with a full body and some tannins that add persistence and structure." Aged 9 months on the fine lees in French oak barrels. Gianfranco Gallo is a perfectionist. Not for him the unoaked, oversweetened simplicity of many white wines from Friuli; he is more interested in richness, texture, length, complexity and the ability to age. For this reason, he releases his white wines 18 months after the vintage. Each wine reflects the way in which a particular grape variety performs on a certain site, for each varietal is named after the vineyard in which the fruit is grown. Gallo is based in the heart of Isonzo, where his 50 hectares of vineyard produce about 250,000 bottles a year. The soil is stony and glacial and soaks up what little rainfall there is like a sponge. Standing in his vineyards, Gallo points to the east, to a pass in the mountains that form a semi-circle in the distance. Through this pass blows a cool east wind that ensures a big difference between day and night temperatures, something which in turn accounts for a great accumulation of flavour in the grapes. This, along with the low yields Gallo achieves and his preference for late picking, gives wines of great intensity and richness. |
