Elk Cove Estate Pinot Noir Rose

Description: This Elk Cove Rosé has a lot of words on its label that make the sound of a cash register (cha-ching!) go off in my head. Start with Willamette Valley, Oregon's premier wine region. It's the Nw equivalent of saying Napa Valley in California or Burgundy in France. Then there is Estate, another word often accompanied by high price, even though in the U.S. it can be thrown around without really meaning anything. Not here, Pat & Joe Campbell founded the winery in 1974, they own the vineyards, and now their son Adam is the winemaker. It is truly an estate. And the grape! Pinot Noir is quite possibly the cha-chingy-ist of all varietals. It is expensive to grow because it's finicky and requires immense care to produce decent wine. To make this rosé, the grapes are hand harvested and pressed gently to limit skin crushing. The juice is white as it is fermented, after which they add a small amount of their (also estate) Pinot Noir for the gorgeous color and to add depth and body to this lovely dry wine. Now, I'm not a math girl, but all of this should make for a wine that costs much more than $16. -Noelle Starr, Surdyk's Staff
