Vintage: 2014
Winery: New Riff Distilling
Description: Founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis, a Kentucky liquor retailer and entrepreneur, New Riff crafts a range of whiskies with a focus on Bourbon and Rye as well as Kentucky Wild Gin.Independently and family-owned, the freedom from outside pressures and interests has allowed New Riff to set meaningful standards of quality, distinguishing them amongst the ranks of Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey distilleries. Although some of their practices are not necessarily new to the world of whiskey, it is unusual to find a distillery adhering simultaneously to so many traditional methods and with such an attention to detail. Sourcing non-GMO grains, using mineral-rich water from an aquifer below the distillery, allowing slow and open fermentation, distilling in copper only, and leaning heavily upon the strict stipulations of Bottled-in-Bond production, New Riff cuts no corners. Therefore, it's no surprise that the accolades for this small distillery continue to grow. Though made with the same sour mash regimen and high-rye mash bill of 65% Corn (non-GMO), 30% Rye, and 5% Malted Barley as New Riff's core bourbon, this Single Barrel selection boasts an individual flavor profile and proof. Non-chill filtered and aged a minimum of four years, expect full and bold flavor with distinctive characteristics that will change with each barrel selected. Bottled at cask strength. Appearance: Extra rich, unfiltered deep amber color. Nose: Butterscotch rounding into fresh oak, with hints of vanilla and rye spice. Taste: Broad, fulsome mouthfeel, leading to a sweeter vanilla accent, before a gathering of rye spices (clove, cinnamon, mint, dark berry) into the finish. Finish: Long, rye-led finish, with brambly red-black fruits amid white pepper and clove. Barrel 17-1967 distilled on March 30, 2017 and bottled on July 20, 2021 on the 9th floor. 52.6% ABV (105.2 Proof).
