Opus One Napa Valley Proprietary Red (high shoulder fill, signs of past seepage)

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends from Napa Valley

Vintage: 1990
Description: 96 points Wine Spectator. Dramatic, with its ripe, rich, plush core of exotic currant, anise, cedar, vanilla and berry notes that are enormously complex on the finish. Delicious. (jl) (2/2000) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. In a blind tasting, this wine did not fool many tasters when served blind. It was quickly identified as a California wine despite the fact that it is made in a Bordeaux-like style. The wine performed well, exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color, a lead pencil, grapy, spicy oak-scented nose, medium body, a tight, more compact texture than the Bordeaux, as well as more elevated and obvious new oak. Rich and ripe, as well as graceful, it stood out as having higher acidity than the Bordeaux. (rp) (2/1997) 90 points Vinous. The 1990 Opus One is another powerful wine built on a serious core of tannin and structure. There is plenty of richness in the glass, but a little less intensity and complexity than the best wines of this era. I imagine the 1990 will still be a delicious wine in another decade. The 1990 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot. Drink through 2025. (ag) (6/2013) K&L Notes. Opus One was founded as a joint venture between Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, and in 1984 released it's first vintage, the 1979. It has since become an international success and a landmark winery in Napa. Comprised of 169 acres of vineyards in Napa Valley, they produce a luxury Bordeaux style blend.
