| Description: | The Color: I Dream of Peaty. Just like the other bottles we got from Compass Box, the Monster is a light gold and doesn't give much of a hint about what you're in for when you open the bottle. The Nose: The Monster Mash. An interesting combination of vanilla and smoke, and even a whiff of fruit and spices somewhere in the background. Reminiscent of our experience with Eleuthera, but bigger somehow. Smoky is the watchword here, and we liked the late-night campfire vibe. The Taste: The Adventures of Peat and Peat. Now this is some peaty stuff, and chewier than anything in liquid form has a right to be. A waft of smoke on first sip, and that smoke just doesn't give up. This one's the gift that keeps on giving, and we mean that in a nice way - you'll be tasting smoke when you go to bed. It's not overpowering, and it's certainly not monstrous in any negative way, just a nice warm smoke with some other curious flavors in the background. Fruit? Vanilla? Leather? It makes you want to go back for another sip to find out. The Verdict: No Monstrosity. Now, we didn't need a whip and a chair to tame this monster - all it took was some time, and an occasional splash of water. We really enjoyed our dram, and in our quest to become Compass Box completists we're going to say everyone who thinks of themselves as scotch drinkers should try this out. However, at sixty bucks a pop this isn't for the fainthearted or the uninitiated. Peat Monster isn't for newbies, and it's not one that's going to convert a non-scotch drinker to the fold. The monster is too bg and scary for that. This is a scotch to work up to but you'll be glad you did.we know this is one monster we'd be happy to find under our bed. |
