Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico
Sangiovese
Description: | Unfortunate associations with straw-covered bottles repurposed as candleholders and Hannibal Lector's culinary predilections have dealt Chianti's reputation a couple of tough blows. But when made right, Chianti can be one of Italy's most food-friendly wines. This holds particularly true for Chianti Classico, the Sangiovese-based wine made from grapes grown in the Tuscan hills between Florence and Siena. Castello di Volpaia's organically farmed vineyards are among the highest in the region, lending elegance to the wine. Bright red cherry and cranberry flavors are complemented by a subtle undertone of forest floor. Softened a bit by the addition of a small percentage of Merlot, there's still plenty of acidity to stand up to full-flavored foods. This is a wine that any fan of Italian reds is sure to love. - David Mahoney, Surdyk's Consultant |
