Description: The Vineyard Mossfire Ranch is a scenic 320-acre p roperty on the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail, in the eastern side of the Paso Robles AVA. Admired for its striking beauty, epic views and superior fruit, the 243 planted acres boast an eclectic mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Tempranillo. The History Mossfire Ranch was originally planted in 1996 and was acquired by Rob Murray in 2006. The vineyard was purchased not just for its diverse terroir and varietal holdings, but also for its undeveloped acreage that shows great potential for additional planting. The Land Mossfire Ranch is visually striking property seated above the Paso Robles valley floor that features panoramic views and a creek running through the middle of the vineyard. For a site of its size, this vineyard features great contrast. The land itself varies greatly in contour and soil-types, ranging from alluvial bottom ground, to steep hillsides, to loamy benches. The soils here run from primarily sandy, gravelly, alluvial soils in the low-lying areas to sandy, loamy, calcium-based soils in the upper blocks. Accordingly, the site is planted to various varietals in order to maximize each unique profile of the vineyard. The Seasons Mossfire Ranch experiences a fairly cold Winter; but the vineyard's position, elevated slightly above the valley floor, means that during Spring there is little to no chance of frost. By Summer, Mossfire Ranch enjoys coastal breezes from the Pacific Ocean, while Fall brings cool mornings and warm, sunny afternoons. Grapes here are typically harvested around the end of September through the middle of October. The Farming When Rob acquired Mossfire Ranch, efforts were focused on returning the vineyard to its natural state by finding more sustainable farming techniques. This included allowing indigenous grasses to grow in the middle of the rows, re-vitalizing the soil structure. Rob also re-configured the irrigation systems to meet each vineyard block's water needs. The vineyard is now reinvigorated produces noteworthy fruit.
