Description: | Wine Spectator 92 Points - "An aromatic underpinning of tarry smoke and medicinal herbs serves as a savory counterpoint to ripe flavors of crme de cassis, blackberry preserves, licorice and espresso crema in this rich red. A frame of sculpted tannins and lightly tangy citrus peel acidity are well-knit to the expressive flavor range, resulting in a powerful, harmonious version. Monastrell. Drink now through 2029. 15,000 cases made, 9,000 cases imported.". Hailing from Alicante, Spain, from old vines set in the steeply rising hills above the pristine sandy beaches of the Costa Blanca in the Southeast of Spain, this site is one of the crown jewels of the region. This estate is run under the direction of the famous Jorge Ordonez, who has single handedly put Spain on the modern map of world class wine growing regions. He has spent the last few decades scouting out the oldest vines of traditionally grown varieties throughout the country, helping to modernize the wineries, revive the proud tradition of viticulture, and as a result, created some of the most iconic wines of Spain. This wine is 100% Mourvedre, or Monastrell, as they refer to this ancient grape locally. Made from ancient vines, which cling to the rocky hillside in rather large, unruly seeming bushes, this generous wine is thick, juicy and packed with flavors of sun-baked black cherry, black licorice, dried violets and rich, meaty aromas of grilling over an open fire, this wine completely over delivers for the modest price. Because of it's wild, succulent and meaty side notes, Mourvedre is always a winner with juicy cuts of steak off the grill. Even better, take advantage of these chilly Spring evenings and slow cook some lamb with roasted root veggies. This wine is so rich and delicious, it can just be enjoyed out on the deck after dinner with a warm fire. |
