After making his home at Tenuta San Guido, located in Bolgheri, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta noticed that the soils at his estate were rocky, reminiscent of the soils in Graves, Bordeaux. In 1944, he was struck with the inspiration to plant Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, and for more than two decades, Mario made his Bordeaux-style wine solely for family consumption. Then Mario engaged esteemed enologist Giacomo Tachis to perfect the wine, and Sassicaia was born with its 1968 vintage. Sassicaia and its Super-Tuscan revolution changed the face of Italian wine — and it catapulted Tenuta San Guido into the highest echelon of wine producers.
