Sziegl Kadarka Hajos-baja, Hungary
Vintage: | 2021 |
---|---|
Description: | The Sziegl [SHE-gull] family started their winery in 2012, with husband BalĂĄzs in the vineyards and wife Petra running the cellar and making the wine. (Pince [PEEN-sa] means cellar.) They are located in HajĂłs-Baja (HI-yosh-BYE-uh), in southern Hungary, near Serbia. This wine is 100% kadarka, harvested from the Herreberg vineyard in two passes a week apart. It macerated for seven days - partly semi-carbonic and partly whole-berry - and then aged in 85% Hungarian oak barrels and 15% in stainless steel tank. It's just 11.8% alcohol and has no added SO2. This is super-pretty Kadarka with delicate red fruits, minerality, and great acidity and freshness. As importer Eric Danch writes, "This is yet another example of one of the most compelling red grapes coming back to life from Central Europe." Chill it for 20-30 minutes before opening. Try it with goulash and other paprika-y dishes, or branch out into other capsica, such as Spanish pimentĂłn or New Mexican red chile. |
