Branger "Le Fils de Gras Moutons" Muscadet

Melon de Bourgogne

Vintage: 2017
Description: Muscadet is noted for its uncompromising dryness an d taut mineral nerve. While many examples are high in acid, this can often be a result of over-zealous early picking and under-ripe fruit. Claude Branger, the vigneron behind the magic of this delicious offering, attests that quality Muscadet's freshness and vitality should come not from acidity, but from its lees aging, terroir, and the barely perceptible spritz of CO2 that imparts a little tingle on the tongue. His basic, every-day Muscadet, "Le Fils des Gras Moutons," exemplifies this perfectly, and in the uber-ripe 2015 vintage to boot! The vines for this wine average forty years of age, and the wine sees about six months of lees aging before bottling, with no fining and just a light filtration. The level of care comes across clearly in the resultant wine: sea salt salinity, a champagne-like expression of brioche, and a citrus tang of lemon zest and fleshy grapefruit. For those who haven't completed their summer ritual without a healthy series of fresh oyster helpings, skip the mignonette and reach for a bottle of Branger instead!
