When he started working in the distillery business as a bookkeeper in 1866 he could scarce have imagined that his own branded whisky would become a worldwide business. Or that it would still be wholly owned by his family five generations later.We think nothing could have made him more proud. Christmas Day is a wonderful time to begin a storyIt was on Christmas Day in 1887 that William Grants own distillery produced its first golden drops of spirit.It had taken 20 years for William to acquire both the expertise and the funds to get started as an independent distiller. Fortunately, he was determined in life, astute in business and skilled in the art of whisky making.William built his first distillery with the help of his seven sons and two daughters. And it was his son-in-law Charles Gordon who became the companys first salesman. A role that took a great deal of determination.Charles started simply by knocking on doors, laden with samples of Williams carefully crafted whisky.At the 181st call he secured his first sale. After a further 503 he landed the second. From then on, things became easier.Williams son, John, then introduced Grants whisky to the wider world by exporting it to the Hudson Bay Company of Canada. With this, Grants worldwide adventure had begun.In 1909 Charles Gordon, spent a year taking Grants to Australia and the Far East. At the start of his epic 12-month journey, Charles wrote in his notebook:All things must yield to industry and time. None cease to rise but those who cease to climb.Sales moved quickly and by 1914, Grants fame had spread and the company had over 60 representatives in 30 countries.In 1915, a new law stated that the minimum maturation period for Scotch whisky was to be two years (today it is three). While this led to the ruin of many a Scotch whisky distillery, William Grant had kept a supply of aging whisky in stock and was able to ensure the Uk had sufficient Grants to be enjoyed throughout the war years.After the Great War, prohibition took effect in many countries, but as a family business, Grant's had the freedom and the foresight to increase production on the belief that prohibition would not last. And when it did end, we had stocks ready to meet the public demand.The end of an era William Grant died in 1923. His real legacy is the unique enthusiasm and energy to succeed that has remained at the heart of the family and the way Grants is made today.The passion for quality continues In 1963, during construction of the Girvan grain distillery, Williams great-grandson, Charles Gordon became so involved in the build that he frequently lived on site in a caravan. He became known for cycling around the site, personally checking each and every minute detail. When the distillery was finally completed, his bicycle was fixed to one of Girvans grain towers as a memento.Then, in 1979, a milestone â Grants Uk sales surpass 1 million cases.Today, Grants sells over 54 million bottles each year in over 180 countries, making us one of the worlds most enjoyed whiskies. Throughout this time, the care and craftsmanship behind Grants whisky remain unchanged. Just as William would have wanted. |
