Fontodi Chianti Classico

Description: | Organically Farmed. 100% Sangiovese. James Suckling 94 Points - "Subtle aromas of sliced strawberries and cherries with some orange peel follow through to a medium body with succulent tannins and a bright and tangy finish. Lovely energy in this one. So good now. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.". Wine Spectator 93 Points - "Rich and velvety, laced with black cherry, blackberry, violet and mineral flavors. This is driven by vibrant acidity and backed by well-mannered tannins. Shows excellent balance and length. Drink now through 2028. 9,750 cases made, 2,800 cases imported.". This is a wine with concentration, intensity, and body, though it's also the elegance in the aromatic display and in the mouthfeel that makes Fontodi one of the benchmark wineries in Chianti Classico. The 2020 bottling is full-bodied, but sleek, with a rounded quality to the tangy - but ripe - red and black fruits; finely-textured, grippy tannins and inner vibrancy of acidity help give form and flow on the palate. This will be a good one to decant now for an hour or hold onto for years to develop complexity and soften further. Aged in previously-used French barrels (barrique), which don't mark the fruit too heavily. This is a benchmark estate for the Panzano area, with the bulk of their vineyards in the famous âConca d'Oroâ(the golden shell), named for its amphitheatre shape and history of growing cereal grains. Today it's recognized as a distinct terroir for Sangiovese, distinguished with moderate to high altitudes, calcareous clay & sandstone soils, and plenty of light ; it's warm and dry with a marked difference in day and night temperatures. |
