Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva

Sangiovese

Vintage: 2015
Description: Review This is a gorgeous set of wines from Monsanto and proprietor Laura Bianchi. The Monsanto Chiantis stand out for their classic, mid-weight profiles and overall purity. The Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio remains the flagship, but over the last few years I have been especially impressed by the straight Riserva, which in the best vintages delivers superb quality as well as value. - From Chianti Classico 2015 & 2016: Right Place, Right Time (Feb 2019) by Antonio Galloni. Producer The Monsanto winery is owned by the Bianchi family. Father, Fabrizio and daughter, Laura manage the Winery today. Castello di Monsanto owns some of the best vineyard sites within the appellation and is home to the largest reserves of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. In 1962, Fabrizio Bianchi founded the winery after it was presented to him as a wedding gift from his parents. That same year, pioneering Monsanto was the first winery to make a Chianti Classico Cru from the single ‘Il Poggio' vineyard and worked to eliminate white grapes from Chianti Classico Riserva blend. Further, in 1981 Monsanto harvested the first 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Nemo, from the Il Mulino vineyard. Decanter 94 points - Castello di Monsanto is in a warm pocket but the vineyards are well-ventilated by sea breezes and temperatures fall sharply at night. The Bianchi family uses autochthonous grapes only for their Chianti Classico. In the Riserva, Colorino is added for colour and Canaiolo Nero for its floral bouquet. Vibrant and clearly defined aromas of pepper, dogwood flower and red cherry lead into a much more austere expression on the palate. It possesses a tight yet succulent core with assertive tannins and a long, earthy and savoury finish where nuances of iron and orange peel promise an appetising future. (Apr 2019). Wine & Spirits 90 points - Monsanto's 2015 riserva is gracefully styled, with scents of lavender and dried herbs that mingle with flavors of ripe plum and cherry. Accents of tobacco emerge with exposure to air, giving the wine a smoky intensity that would match well with grilled meats. (Apr 2019). Vinous 92 points - The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is bold, ample and powerful, with a real sense of breadth in this vintage. The tannins need time to soften, as the wine is a bit burly at this stage. This is another stellar release for a wine that routinely overachieves its peer group and price. Dense and packed, with tremendous structure, the 2015 has a lot to say. But readers will have to be patient, as it is very clearly early days for this wine. 100 Best Wines Under $30 (2018) - Aromas of plums, cherries and hints of green olives. White truffles and deep earth, too. Full-bodied, so layered and beautiful with a fabulous texture and ripe tannins. It is so pure and minimalist in the end, showing the effect of traditional, hands-off winemaking. Don't miss this. Decant before serving. One for the cellar. Drink or hold. (Feb 2019) Color: Ruby red tending towards garnet Aroma: Rich, intense and complex with aromas of black cherry and spice Palate: Full bodied with rich red berry fruit flavors matched with a backbone of tannin
