Description: | Organically Farmed. James Suckling 94 Points - "Attractive aromas of ripe cherries, dried strawberries, dried orange peel, spices and crushed stones, following through to a medium to full body with compact tannins that are firm and finely grained. Smooth and textured with vivid fruit underneath and a lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.". Volpaia farms organically, uses the yeast native to the area, and ages the wine mostly giant Slavonian oak barrels, the latter being a traditional way of aging Italian wines that introduces fewer effects from the wood itself. They also use some smaller French oak barrels, but they are seasoned, lending only subtle spice. The result is something distinctively Tuscan, a place of both tradition and innovation, rusticity and polish. The Volpaia family has some history with excellence, by the way. Ancestor Lorenzo della Volpaia (1446-1572) was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci, and took part in the Florentine Rennaissance. He was an architect, goldsmith, mathematician, and clockmaker, gaining fame with the construction of the Orologio dei Pianeti (Planetary Clock), and the clock at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence that you can see today! |
