Description: Azienda Fratelli Pighin was founded in 1963 when brothers Ercole, Luigi and Fernando Pighin acquired an estate in the D.o.c. Grave-del-Friuli zone then belonging to an aristocratic Friulian family. The estate's villa, constructed in the 1400s, is a historic structure registered in the list of the 'Ville Venete'; it has been preserved in the detail of its original design, and serves as the residential public relations house of Fratelli Pighin. The Pighin's transformation of the estate began in 1964, with restoration of the property to vineyards and orchards with 70% to vines and 30% to pear and apple trees. In 1968, more vineyards were acquired in the tiny, prestigious D.o.c. Collio zone, expanding the portfolio to encompass a full range of classic wines from the two finest viticultural growing areas in Friuli. . Pighin Pinot Grigio is an estate bottled wine produced from select grapes grown in their estate vineyards. The western portion of the estate has chalky stone and gravel soils well suited for cultivation of white vine varieties, of which 150 acres are planted in Pinot Grigio yielding a low average of 3.5 to 4 tons of grapes per acre, restricted through severe pruning. The berries are gently pressed immediately after harvest in Bucher pneumatic presses and the must chilled and allowed to settle for 24 hours. A temperature-controlled fermentation is then carried out stainless steel tanks over a period of two weeks. There is no malolactic fermentation or oak contact.
