Glayva Liqueur

Description: Hugely popular Scottish liqueur made with whisky, honey, spices, almonds and tangerines. The name is the phonetic pronunciation of the Gaelic 'gle mhath' meaning 'very good'. Rather brilliantly, Glayva is now trademarked as 'the best liqueur in the world' after winning the IWSC trophy a record breaking five times. Glayva is a liqueur produced in Leith, Scotland, by Whyte and Mackay Ltd. It is marketed with the slogan 'best liqueur in the world'. Glayva is made from a blend of aged Scotch whiskies, herbs, anise, cloves, almonds, heather honey, and citrus fruits. It has a deep gold colour and a distinctive flavour. Its name is an Anglicised spelling of Gle Mhath, which means 'very good' in Scottish Gaelic. In contrast, Glayvas own website states: "Glayva translates in Gaelic to very good “ the words spoken by Morrisons warehouseman upon tasting the liquid."Glayva has been made since 1947, according to their website Legend has it that when Bonnie Prince Charlie was served this whisky based liqueur one night, he looked at his host, held up the glass and spoke in The Gaelic "Gle mhath!" thus giving the drink the name it carries to this day.
