Full-flavoured, with a long persistence of anise. Alcohol Content: 42% by volume.The name "sambuca" has rather obscure origins and meaning. Most certainly, it has nothing to do with elderberry (sambucus, in Latin), although several dictionaries claim the opposite. In fact, elderberry is not one of the many herbs used to make "sambuca". Other hypothesis â rather hard to verify, though â include the idea that the word derives from the Arab noun zammut, which is related to the concept of "pleasant scent".In our opinion, the most believable version comes from Luigi Manzi, the first to produce Sambuca in Civitavecchia (Antica Sambuca Manzi 1851), who wrote, in June 1851, he chose the name because sounded similar to "sambuchelli" â or "acquaioli", i.e. water and anis sellers â in his native Ischia. We have no reason to doubt his claims, even if - until now - no proof has arisen. Molinari Extra is obtained by the sweetened infusion of star anise dried seeds, from which is obtained â through distillation â the essence of anise and the essential oils that represent the base of the flavour. |
