Empire Estate, Riesling, Finger Lakes

Vintage: 2019
Description: The Finger Lakes are a series of eleven serpentine lakes carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age into the rolling hills of Western New York State. These crystalline, spring-fed lakes are some of the deepest in the United States and are framed by terraced vineyards reminiscent of Germany's Rhine River wine region. Much like the Rhine, the pristine waters of the lakes create a mitigating influence in the form of various milder microclimates. During the winter, the stored heat is released from the deep lakes, fostering warmer temperatures vis-à-vis the surrounding region at such a northerly latitude. The steep, shale-encrusted hillsides also provide good drainage and sun exposure, minimizing frost risk. Riesling thrives in this unique growing region, and New York super-somm Thomas Pastuszak has set out to highlight this delightful varietal with his new brand, Empire Estate. A shimmering silver-yellow color on the nose, this Riesling displays supple fruit tones of golden apple, tangerine, lime zest & ginger, with racy mineral aromas of gravel, shale & limestone. Brisk acidity hits the palate, followed by peach, grapefruit pith & candied lemon flavors, all leading to a long, savory mineral finish. - Acme Fine Wines
