| Description: | Tasting notes A complex wine with red fruit flavours. Big, elegant and ripe tannin structures. Will over time show more secondary and forest floor characteristics. Rating James Suckling 92 points (Aug 2017). Bright and delicious aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, fruit compote and hints of vanilla and sweet spices. The full-bodied palate has a really fresh blueberry tinge that runs all the way through it with silky tannins and a long finish. One of the best pinotages from South Africa. Vinous 91 points (May 2017). Bright medium ruby. Expressive aromas of blackberry, woodsmoke and chocolate. Very sweet, plush and deep but not overly fruity, with plum, blackberry and licorice flavors complicated by a hint of banana chips and smoky minerality. Finishes with a firm spine of well-integrated tannins, a dusty mocha note and excellent length and grip. Wine Advocate 90 points (Apr 2017). The 2014 Pinotage is matured for 16 months in 80% new oak. It offers a vivid and powerful bouquet of black cherries, licorice, melted tar and blueberries that seem to gush from the glass. The palate is powerful on the entry with bold tannin, but there is the acidity here to keep everything balanced and counter the layers of fruit with freshness and tension. As I have written before, Kanonkop know how to make a great Pinotage and this is a delight. Wine maker notes Winemaking at Kanonkop follows the age-old tradition of being made in open concrete fermenters, but with a slight difference, the tanks are wide and shallow, rather high and deep. This ensures maximum skin contact. Only French Nevers barrels are used for breeding, with the exception of a few experimental barrels each year. All cellaring, bottling and labelling is done on Kanonkop. |
