Guffens Au Sud Roussanne

Description: | You might not know it from the charmingly understat ed and retro label, but winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens is quite a formidable figure in the industry. Best known for his mastery of Chardonnay in Burgundy, this titan of terroir has turned his transfixing talents to one of the Southern Rhone's more under-appreciated grapes with Guffens au Sud Roussanne. If you've ever wondered what is meant when people refer to "aromatic whites", or the "aromatic varietals"- well, here you go. Bursting with rich, golden perfume, this wine has an almost overwhelming nose. Honeysuckle, overripe pear, melon and a subtle streak of phenolic acidity leap out of the glass at a moment's notice. This sticky, nectary character manifests on the palate as well. Aided by six months of lees aging and just a bit of used oak, this round, yellow-flowered rush suggests something verging on sweetness, but the finish is as fresh and clean as you could want. In his admirable crusade against snobbery, pretension and nepotism, Guffens has termed this wine only "Vin de France". I guess all you really need to know is that we've got it, and you want it. - Regular Price: $15 Special WoM Price: $10 Food Pairings: Classic Nicoise Salad; Leek & Jowl Bacon Frittata; Harbison (Camembert-style wrapped with spruce bark) |
