Fratelli Alessandria Monvigliero Barolo

Fratelli Alessandria Monvigliero Barolo

Vintage: 2018
Description: Fratelli Alessandria's history in Barolo goes back to the mid 1800s with familial connection to the Burlottos. They age for around 3 long years in traditional, larger Slavonian and French oak vats, favoring a moderately pure expression of the fruit. Their Monvigliero plots are higher in altitude -around 320 meters - compared with neighboring San Lorenzo, and still facing the midday sun. It's one of the top vineyards of Barolo. While Verduno wines are known for their ''elegant' side to broad-shouldered Barolo, the result here displays firm, lacy tannins around a suave, mouthfilling volume of fruit, and an aromatic complexity that rivals any Barolo for the impression it makes. Monvigliero did well in avoiding the shocks of other areas during the 2018 vintage, which saw a lot of rain and more inconsistencies compared to the sunnier, drier average of late. This shows in the cool restraint aromatically, with fresher fruit tones; the lacy web of tannins frames the explosive, juicy palate but is not overly aggressive. A several-hour decant at 62-65f and a delicious food pairing are all it needs!. Vinous 95 Points - "The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is broad, ample and so expressive, all while showing the finesse and classicism that are such a signature of this wine. All elements are so well balanced in a Barolo that speaks to harmony above all else. Sweet red cherry, cedar, orange peel, tobacco and cinnamon give the 2018 tons of aromatic presence. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It's a gorgeous wine in every way." - Antonio Galloni. Wine Advocate 95 Points - "The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero shows a beautiful signature of pressed violets, rose garden, white stone, crushed peppercorn and grilled rosemary. The wine is smooth and soft in texture, yet it feels stitched up and firm at the back thanks to the support it gets from those balanced tannins. This wine should hold 20 years or more.". Wine Enthusiast 95 Points - "Heady aromas of camphor, rose petal and red forest berry come to the forefront along with whiffs of pipe tobacco and new leather. Full-bodied but refined and well-balanced, the savory palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and mint alongside velvety tannins and fresh acidity." - Kerin O'keefe, September 2022
