Merlot was the wine that really put Washington State on the World wine map, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It's also the wine that bought Jed Steele to Washington. And his Northstar, with "access to the top 2% of Washington Merlot grapes," remains one of the handful of very best Merlots. We sold a boatload of the 2012 vintage at $30 (with no case discount), and this 2013 rates even better on CellarTracker. (In fact, of the 22 vintages reviewed, only 1999 rates higher.). The Wine Spectator rates it higher, too…indeed the best vintage ever:. Supple and expressive, plush in texture but not weighty, layering blueberry and currant flavors with hints of cream and green olive. Lingers easily. Best from 2018 through 2023. And the Wine Enthusiast rates it outstanding, too:. Herb, pencil lead, plum and vanilla aromas are followed by smooth, soft blue-fruit flavors. It shows a beautiful sense of balance. Merlot is the grape that brought Jed Steele to Washington, and this Merlot realizes his ambition. It's one of Washington's – and America's – finest.
