Caren and Fritz are names that are just about synonymous with Napa Valley. Their brand, Arietta, is a legendary label that helped to define Napa Cabernet as it entered the world stage, and continues to be coveted by collectors near and far. Over the many decades that the brand grew in recognition and demand, Caren quietly kept her eye on a long-term goal of one day making a Pinot Noir. It seemed like maybe a farfetched idea that would always remain just out of reach, but as things tend to happen in our industry, the perfect vineyard presented itself and Nestweaver was created shortly after. The fruit for this miniscule debut release is sourced from the Corpuel Family Vineyard, a 7.6-acre plot dedicated to three clones of premium Pinot Noir: Pommard, Vosne-Romanee, and Swan. Just a few miles from the famed Littorai Estate and planted by the vineyard whisperer, Ulises Valdez, in 2016, this rustic vineyard is remote and perfectly suited to develop the old-world qualities Caren idealizes in Pinot Noir. Behind the winemaking are two men, Andy Erickson and Patrick Nyeholt, who are demonstrating a critical passing of the guards from one generation to the next. Andy is one of the most celebrated winemakers of our time and has made the Arietta wines for almost 20 years. Patrick is Andy's right-hand man for Arietta, and spent his youth running through the vineyard rows of Shake Ridge, his family's estate. With Nestweaver's debut vintage, Andy and Patrick worked together to bring Caren's vision to life with the ultimate goal of handing the winemaking over to Patrick entirely for the '22 vintage and beyond. Without these thoughtful moments of tutelage and mentorship, our industry would be without young and eager talent. Luckily, Caren and Andy seized the moment to push Patrick's career to a new level. The inaugural release of Nestweaver is a translucent ruby red with a delicate structure and very enticing aromatics. On the nose you'll find wild cherry, raspberry, blood orange, rose petal, and mushrooms. 30% new French oak and 9 months of elevage set the stage for a palate that is soft, expansive, and framed by a lovely dose of acidity. Even with the forwardness of the fruit there is a purity and focus through the mid-palate that integrates seamlessly with a persistent finish. Though enjoyable now, it is clear the wine will continue to evolve over years in bottle. We haven't been this giddy over a Pinot Noir is quite some time. If you are a lover of boutique California Pinot and enjoy a more Burgundian approach, this wine is a slam dunk for your cellar! - ACME Fine Wines |
