Producer Like many territories where great wines are produced, Colli Orientali del Friuli was deeply influenced by the Romans who brought viticulture and wine to the area. Evidence of this historical reality can still be found today, in the names of the area's towns. And if that's not enough, on the hill that hosts Torre Rosazza, it's possible to catch a glimpse of Aquileia, which was once an important imperial Roman presidio. Since its first contacts with viticulture, the Rosazzo area has upheld a particularly strong wine-producing mission and its love of wine has been passed down throughout the centuries, especially thanks to the Benedictine monks of the Rosazzo Abbey, an authentic reference point for the enological culture of Northern Italy. The territory of Torre Rosazza was right inside the privileged Colli Orientali of Friuli Micro-zone, which is recognized today by the name Rosazzo. For hundreds of years, rows of vineyards decorated the landscape, alternating with olive trees that emphasized the presence of a special temperate micro-climate that sparked their cultivation. After the historical freeze that decimated the area's olive groves in the first years of last century, local agricultural experts opted to plan vineyards rather than trees. Thus, the area's wine-making vocation immersed with even more strength. Another crucial moment for the wine-making industry in this area occurred in the 1970's when Italian enology discovered the immense patrimony it had at its disposal, and addition top-notch techniques for vine cultivation and wine-making developed in the area, combining traditional know-how with solid scientific knowledge, capable of transforming each grape variety into wines of ever-increasing quality. Torre Rosazza was created precisely at this time. In 1974, the company was purchased by Genagricola, which immediately initiated a project aimed at researching and zoning the vineyard's 90 vineyards in efforts to identity the quality of each terrain. It also sought to find the lots necessary for guaranteeing the exposure and geological properties for best interpreting the territory's vineyards. In those years, Walter Filiputti led the cellar's choices, embarking on a journey that Torre Rosazza is still experiencing today. Most likely the first to do so in Friuli, it was Filiputti who initially introduced the use of barriques during the long refining process used for red wines. He was also the one to initiate the Ronchi Line and the Cru di Torre Rosazza. Those same years saw the birth of L'Altromerlot, Torre Rosazza's signature wine whose name emphasizes a production concept inspired by the most refined French enological techniques which were very different from those generated by competing companies at the time. The company's enological management is currently entrusted to enologist Luca Zuccarello. Wine Spectator 90 points - Lithe and lightly mouthwatering, this graceful white offers a pretty mix of Bartlett pear, blood orange sorbet and pickled ginger flavors, underscored by a minerally streak of saline. Drink now through 2023. 650 cases imported. (Jun 30 2020) This straw-colored wine has golden reflections. To the nose, it gives off pronounced floral scents that become fruity, recalling the flavor of apple and ripened pear. The palate will find this wine soft and engulfing as it wisely combines good body with pleasantly acidic nervature, which provides for fresh drinkability. Well-balanced in all its components, this wine has a good level of persistence.
