Description: | We have an outstanding value from Spain for lovers of bold, full-bodied fruit-driven reds ! The Bodegas Vatan 2019 "Triton" is made from the thick-skinned type of Tempranillo that evolved in the dramatic climate of Toro, a region along the Duero River. Coming from Jorge Ordonez, it shouldn't be a surprise to find a wine this good for the price, as he is involved in the Spanish wine industry like few others. While Toro was a famous region in the Middle Ages, it was Jorge Ordonez who co-founded the Numanthia-Termes winery in the late 90s, renewing the region's fame worldwide!. In the 2019 edition of Triton, its saturating concentration of plum and vibrant strawberry cordial come with a surprising freshness and depth, and tinged with a savory saline and graphite streak that keeps the finish balanced. The toasty, creamy oak enhances the initial decadence of fruit, though moving into the finish, the mineral-tinged fruit character wins out, with the oak taking on a more cedary, woodsy tone. Tannins and acidity are thoroughly fruit-enrobed, creating a mellow vibrancy and coating of velvet-textured, chalky Tempranillo tannins. That character of fruit in this humble wine owes much to the non-irrigated, old vines struggling in Toro's dramatic, continental climate where dry, sunny days give way to cold nights. The vines for "Triton" bottling were planted between 1900 and 1970, with the average being 79 years old! That's plenty of time for roots to go deep into the sandy soils to find water stores beneath. Not many wines under $15 can boast that !. Jeb Dunnuck 92 Points - "The 2019 Tinta De Toro Triton is another great value. Coming from six vineyard sites located in Toro and Morales de Toro, all planted between 1900 and 1958, it offers a rich, powerful, structured style in its smoked black fruits (there are some red fruits as well) to go with notes of sandalwood, cedary herbs, graphite, and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied, its balance is spot on, it has ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Its going to keep for a decade.". Practicing Organic Farming |
