Ciacci Piccolomini Pianrosso Brunello Di Montalcino

Description: | The estate has been enjoying international success for their powerful - but elegant and expressive - wines. While the noble Ciacci-Piccolomini d'Aragona family set the stage for fine winemaking, events took a fortuitous turn in 1985 when the countess Elda Ciacci left everything to the estate manager, Giuseppe Bianchini! Having farmed the land himself for years, he knew the Pianrosso vineyard to be exceptional enough for its own bottling. He was right! When his children took over in 2004, they didn't miss a beat, helping make the Pianrosso bottling an icon of modern Brunello. Representing its home in the warm hills of southern Montalcino, near the town of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the Pianrosso Brunello shows the full-bodied, richly-textured side to Sangiovese. What really distinguishes the wine, though, are the vivid aromas, core of fine mineral sensations, and elegant textures throughout. You get a mouthwatering rush of aromas and flavors like vibrant raspberry liqueur and juicy cherry set against refreshing aromatic herbs; warm spices contrasting with colorful florals ; and smoldering, earthy, woodsy, leather and coffee background notes. With the lengthy 3-year oak aging, these elements are coaxed into mingling more as a whole. Bottle age mellows the fruit, creates more savory tones, and rounds the edges. Check out the stellar reviews from Italian wine critic and Brunello specialist, Kerin O'Keefe!. The 2019 vintage is certainly one of the modern-day greats, with plenty of warmth in Summer, then a late harvest in the cooler days of Fall. This gave the 2019 bottling plenty of richness and fruit-enrobed tannins, but with a crucial sense of freshness at the core. The great depth of Pianrosso aromas is there, dipping into the darker-toned, woodsy, spicy, earthy-herbal end of the spectrum. Still young, it does have a grippy coating of tannins that give the wine a softly chewy mouthfeel. As usual for Brunello, give this a couple hours to open up outside of the bottle, or hold onto it for years to come. Organically Grown. Kerin O'keefe 100 Points - "Boasting great depth and extreme elegance, the drop-dead gorgeous Ciacci Piccolomini Pianrosso delivers crushed raspberry, succulent Morello cherry, star anise and crushed mint flavors while aromas of eucalyptus, wild rose, new leather and forest floor continuously lift out of the glass. Its a smooth, stunning wine, with taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity that lend great aging potential and energy. Absolutely stunning.". Luca Gardini 100 Points - "a cornerstone of the typology, we are in the southeastern region of the denomination, a stones throw from Castelnuovo dellAbate. Rich nose, notes of red mulberry, then rosemary and touches of Peranzana olives. The taste is savory, with a return of red mulberry and iodine-officinal shades.". Wine Advocate 97 Points - "There's no mistaking this wine for anything but Brunello. The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows beautiful continuity, crescendoing on the nose and palate in synchronicity. There are aromas of grilled watermelon, red cherry, garden herb and violet, and there is a charred note that recalls the toasted oak. The bouquet balances out beautifully, but you do get considerably more power on the palate thanks to the oomph of 15% alcohol and young tannins that get under your gums. Give this wine a few more years of bottle age." |
