Description: | Located in the small northern village of Macouba, Martinique, at the base of iconic volcano Mt. Pele, Rhum J.m produces the finest AOC Rhum Agricole from estate-grown sugarcane. Credited to be the first recorded distillery to produce Rhum Agricole, there is no fresher sugarcane crush in the world, taking less than an hour for sugarcane to go from field to fermentation tank. The agricole category for rhum, in general, means they use the fresh-pressed sugar cane juice to make their rhums, as opposed to molasses, the byproduct of the sugar refining process. This changes the flavor profile immensely when compared to molasses-based rums ( mais naturellement ) and makes rhum agricoles stand out for many reasons. Our store pick bottling is a lovely example of Rhum Agricole from the Martinique AOC (The AOC or Appelation dOrigine Contrle mark was adopted by the Martinique distillers in 1996 and it is unique to the rhum of Martinique). The nose is filled with tree fruit scents with apple in the lead aided by hints of pear as a nice layer of brown spices and a touch of herbal rounds everything out. The palate continues with tree fruits, dried apple and spicy pear, as more baking spices (cinnamon, cardamom) create a tasty profile. The American oak really works with the aged rhum. This will probably work well in a panoply of cocktails but its so delicious neat we may be hard-pressed to add anything to it. The finish adds more spicy apple and lasts and lasts. |
