Mauro Molino Barolo

Mauro Molino Barolo

Vintage: 2019
Description: The Mauro Molino estate in the picturesque Barolo valley has remained under the radar, but their classic Barolo from the wonderful 2019 vintage proves they're a winery to follow ! For their classic Barolo they pull from the districts of Annunziata and Berri in La Morra, and Perno in Monforte d'Alba, with soils and cooler exposures that tend to stretch the ripening out a bit later. With the wonderful, even-keeled 2019 growing season pushing harvests toward the cooler days of mid-October, the elements were in place for the winery to make a classically pale-hued Barolo with a poised tension between elegance and power, buoyancy and solidity. Mauro Molino's 2019 Barolo is mid-weight and aromatically lifted, with a powerful core of vibrant, savory red fruits and springtime flowers against a background of earthy mineral and woodsy spice. Some of the wine's approachable, polished and well-delineated character comes from Mauro Molino's modern take on traditions, extracting from the skins in moderation and aging in large, 'neutral' oak barrels for a relatively brief 18 months. Of course, this is Barolo, and Mauro Molino's shows its fine-grained tannic grip in the end, though feeling more rounded on the edges than steely. Enjoy this now with breathing time in the decanter, or hold for a few years for it to further evolve and unwind. This will shine with dishes that marry vibrancy and flavor intensity with a touch of richness, like a wine-braised oxtail rag, roast duck with a red currant sauce or simply risotto al Barolo !. Mauro Molino founded his winery in 1979 based around his family's small La Morra estate. Since then, they've gathered an excellent collection of plots in prime vineyard districts. A new path was forged in the 2000s when Mauro's son and daughter finished their studies at the Barolo region's Alba Winemaking School, bringing in fresh ideas. They practice sustainable farming. Wine Advocate 95 Points - "The Molino family shows a deft hand with Nebbiolo, as is illustrated by the 2019 Barolo. This wine shows great harmony, a lightweight style and a polished mouthfeel, with strong power too. The aromas follow a classic Nebbiolo playlist with small currants, blue flower and rusty nail. As far as classic Barolo goes, the 2019 is about as classic as they come. This wine is especially lifted and bright. With 45,000 bottles made, you get an outstanding value here."
