Pichon Baron (750ML)
From Pauillac
Vintage: | 2002 |
---|---|
Description: | 93 Ws / 92 Ja / 92 Vm / 91 De. Dense aromas of licorice, tobacco, cedar and currants. Subtle yet complex. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a rich, long finish. Very pretty. One of the best from Pauillac this year, and clearly better than 2001. One of the surprises of the vintage.-Wine Spectator. Inky purple in colour, holding its shape and form right through to the core of the wine, and plenty of Pauillac character to the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant nose. Touch of smoked caramel, cassis and bilberry, the fruit is less nuanced than with the 2001 or the 2000, but this is packed with slate-textured tannins and juicy minerality on the finish. Woodsmoke and ash curl out of the glass as it opens. 70% new oak. Jean-Rene Matignon technical director.-Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux. Saturated ruby-red. Currant, minerals and exotic oak on the nose. Rich, supple and chewy, with impressive density and depth. Nicely firmed by bright, harmonious acidity (3.5 grams per liter, which director Seely said was the same as in 1988). Seamless wine with solid underlying structure. Finishes with sweet tannins and lovely length.-Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media Poor flowering and uneven climatic conditions made 2002 a problematic year, and many wines should be drunk soon. This still shows remarkable depth of colour, and the nose is rich and opulent with brooding black fruit and chocolate aromas. Plump and rounded on the palate, it has upfront fruit with some freshness and grip too. It's a tad hollow, but doesn't lack fruit and is starting to drink well. This is concentrated yet not too dense, and has a long and rather chewy finish.-Stephen Brook, Decanter |
