Domaine François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 1.5L

Vintage: 2009
Winery: Domaine Francois Raveneau
Description: One thing about François Raveneau is that this taciturn vigneron did things his way. In 1948, François united the last of his family's Chablis parcels with those of his wife, a member of the Dauvissat family, to form the estate that still bears his name. François was the first of his long line of winemakers to estate-bottle his own wines, and the wines he made were so extraordinary — and so miniscule in quantity — that to experience them was a Chablis-lover's dream. François dedicated his life to securing outstanding vineyards and to producing the best, most terroir-driven wines he could make. He didn't care about fame or fortune, and he refused to export his wines to the States until the 1980s! Today, the estate is run by François' three children, vigneron Jean-Marie, his brother Bernard, and Bernard's daughter Isabelle. The estate still makes tiny quantities (just 3,000 cases a year) from its 20-acres of mostly grand cru and premier cru vineyards, still handpicks its grapes, and still shuns the limelight in pursuit of making extraordinary Chardonnay wines.
