This is another example of the new wave winemakers, learning lessons from traditional sources on how to make high quality, small-production wine that is both delicious and reflective of the place from which it comes! Xarel-lo is a leading white variety in the areas around Barcelona, and most commonly found in Spain's famous sparkling wines (Cava, Conca del Riu Noia). With a firm acidity and a moderate aromatic intensity of lemon-lime citrus, white-fleshed stone fruits and fresh herbs. This bottling keeps the usual refreshing, medium-light-bodied character of Xarel-lo, but with a depth and elegance that catches your attention. "Xarel-lo is from a single, north-facing vineyard named âVinya del Boet Vell,â planted in 1978. The grapes are skin-macerated for 48 hours before pressing into old 500l French oak barrels and 600l clay amphorae to ferment with natural yeasts, where the wine ages for about 8 months without any stirring. Intent on displaying the true essence of these particular microclimates of Penedès, AgustĂ works without any additions (including sulfur) or interventions in the winery; he uses clay anfora, concrete and used French oak barrels for fermentations and aging; and the finished wines are not fined or filtered. There is something unique about the terruño of Penedès and AgustĂ Torello Roca is on a quest to showcase it. Through single parcels and the most respectful of farming and winemaking, AgustĂ is here to reveal the soul of the Alt Penedès.
