Domaine de Gournier Viognier

Domaine de Gournier Viognier

Viognier

Vintage: 2013
Description: Wine maker notes The Barnouin family began as pepinierists, or vine clone experts. Maurice's now- 200 hectare estate is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvedre, as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. This wine is crafted from young-vine Viognier that is planted on a plateau with a limestone sub-soil, which helps guard the minerality of the fruit naturally. Southeast exposure provides the perfect environment and encourages extended hang time, allowing the grape skins to reach their full ripeness potential, resulting in clean aromatics and an intensely flavored wine. The Gournier Viognier. is complimented by a touch of Chardonnay from new cask and a splash of Sauvignon Blanc for acidity and freshness. Producer This beautiful estate, owned by Maurice Barnouin, is located in the hills northwest of Nimes, in the western Rhone Valley near the town of Uzes and the famous Pont du Gard. The viticultural area lies just outside the Costieres de Nimes appellation and is only entitled to label its wines as Vin de Pays des Cevennes. The wines of Domaine de Gournier however, aspire to greater stature than this simple designation. Being up in the hills, the microclimate is cool. The Barnouin family were pepinierists by trade (vine rootstock and clone experts), and Maurice's father was a pioneer in the regions re-planting with low-yielding, intensely flavored varietals like Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Merlot.
