Description: | It is not exactly a secret that this domaine has been providing grapes for decades to one of Burgundy's most respected Puligny-Montrachet producers : Maison Joseph Drouhin. The Pernot family is also a highly sought-after domaine in its own right, officially on its third generation as an estate, and a family of vignerons for over 200 years. This information (and more below) make this Puligny-Montrachet both an extraordinary quality and value. This classic white Burgundy from the famous village of Puligny-Montrachet is from one of Puligny's most historic and influential domaines, run by the legend Paul Pernot for over 60 years. Known for producing classical wines with pristine fruit, Paul Pernot is now assisted by his two sons, and they have 20ha, 15 in Puligny, including several fine 1er cru and two grand cru. Winemaking remains traditional, new oak is kept to 20-30% for 1er crus, 40-50 for the grand cru and bâtonnage is minimal, with none post -malolactic fermentation. These are not flashy wines, their peach and white flower fruit is balanced by cool, chalky minerality and racy succulence; they are the epitome of Puligny. The Pernot holdings, some of which have been in the family for over 200 years, are a veritable who's who of Puligny's best terroirs. The domaine's youngest vines, in some village sites, are 20 years old. Most of the 1er and Grand Cru were planted by Paul between 1957 and 1961 and pre-date modern clones. No herbicides are used anymore and the approach of ‘Lutte Raisonnée' (aka Sustainable) is followed. Winemaking is simple, after pressing the juice settles for 24 hours and is then racked into barrel for fermentation. The wines are racked once more before bottling with a light filtration. The Domaine Paul Pernot was founded in 1959, on the famous commune of Puligny-Montrachet, in Burgundy. Although, the vineyard itself is much older than that, as it's been in the Pernot family for more than 200 years. After three decades of good and loyal service to his grapevines, Paul Pernot decided to retire and leave the family business in the capable hands of his two sons, Paul (Jr.) and Michel. Today, the 10 hectares vineyard of the early years has doubled in size to reach a total surface of 23 hectares. Almost 70% of the grapevines are from the Puligny-Montrachet premier cru appellation. The Domaine Paul Pernot is actually one of the biggest producers for the appellation, like the Domaine Leflaive and the Domaine de Montille. Two parcels of grands crus located on the Côte de Beaune (the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet appellations) also belong to the Pernot brothers. Michel and Paul are backed up by Paul Sr.'s grand-daughter, Alvina Pernot. She became a winemaker in 2017, with the support of her husband Philippe. Not only does she lend a hand to the family estate but she also produces her very own brand of wine, under her name. Alvina is on a quest to offer a unique and authentique experience to customers, as she fights to preserve each local terroir's specificities. |
