Smelling this is like looking down into a vast chasm filled with blackberries. Stunning mineral energy and focus on the medium-bodied palate. You can almost taste the wind that whips over this hilltop site. Then a wave of tiny, fresh blackberries washes over your palate at the wonderfully energetic finish. The production from six hectares goes into this wine. Drink or hold.--James Suckling. This delightful wine has a ripe blueberry and blackberry fruit character with pronounced floral notes on the initial attack. It has an impressively dense and tightly wound texture on the palate, yet the feel is elegant and not heavy. Burgaud notes that this is the highest elevation of his sites (at 370m) and the coolest; the vines were planted in 1933 in granite soils on the plateau that borders Régnié, sloping gently toward the south.--Charles Curtis Mw, Decanter. 2022 was a standout year for the Côte du Py, making wines of great depth that will stand a great test of time. On the nose, the 2022 Morgon Côte du Py unfurls with aromas of tangy blackberries, plums, blood orange, oak leaf and slate. Medium to full-bodied, this wine exudes an energetic presence, characterized by a well-defined structure upheld by tangy acids and velvety tannins made firm by concentration. Deeply nuanced, it gradually unfolds on the palate with layers of umami richness intertwined with hints of iron-like salinity melded seamlessly with persistent tangy black fruit. This is a standout wine that demands attention.-Kenna Wells, The Wine Advocate. The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py has an absolutely delightful bouquet. Much more charming than the Corcelette, it shows exquisite delineation with perfumed, mineral-laced red fruit. The palate is mediumbodied with fine-boned tannins, very focused with a touch of Indian spice toward the detailed finish. This has a long life ahead. Burgaud created his property in 1989, and farms 17.5ha in total today, including 12.5ha in Morgon and another 5ha of Beaujolais Villages in Lantignié. Most of his vineyards are planted with old vines (50-70 years old). The fermentation is done as whole clusters using a semi-carbonic process. The single-climat bottlings from Cras, Charmes, Corcelette, and Côte du Py have slightly extended maceration. The maturation is done exclusively in tank, save the Javernières and the cuvée he calls James (after James Bond), both aged in used casks for a year. - Decanter. |
