Petrolo "BOGGINA A" Sangiovese Val D' Arno Di Sopra
Vintage: | 2016 |

Description: | This Tuscan red stands out for the fine balance - and sheer drinkability - it displays: delicate yet generous, showing the warmth of its origins without overstatement. It's the intersection of a prime vineyard, an exceptional growing season, and thoughtful winemaking. It's a small production wine with a lot of soul. This is the 2016 Petrolo Bggina 'a'. When first poured, the well-defined perfume is led by stony-edged, sunny, ripe fruits. As it opens with air, the aromas and flavors become more expansive, resolving into a mix of fresh and cordial-like red fruits like red plum and cherry, gently spicy herbal accents like tobacco, along with a kiss of Sangiovese's warm iron-rich earth tone. It's mid-bodied, but generously flavored and textured, with a tapered finish that's long and delicate in its delivery. The structure is well-measured, with a vein of soft acidity tucked into the sunny fruit, making it mouthwateringly juicy ; and a mere smattering of fine tannins provide needed grounding through their gentle grip. Unlike so many Sangioveses at this level, this is more about elegance and succulence than about power and structure. The Petrolo winery's historic Bggina vineyard sits on a hillside in the Val d'Arno di Sopra (the Arno River valley south of Florence) just inland from the hills of Chianti Classico. The growing season here is a little warmer, giving this Sangiovese that ripe, rounded succulence. It helps that 2016 was an exceptional year for wines of depth and balance ! What sets the Bggina 'a' bottling further apart is the ancient technique of fermenting in terracotta pots, and aging the wine for 8 months on the skins. The terracotta allows for a slow oxygenation like oak barrels do, but without the flavors of the oak itself. The skin contact provides some natural protection from spoilage, and helps to preserve aromatic freshness. Only around 5,000 bottles of this are made each year. Wine Advocate 95 Points - " Aged in amphorae, the 2016 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bggina A is a pure expression of Sangiovese. The wine is beautifully ethereal, delicate and fragile, showing focused purity and intensity at the same time. In a nutshell, this wine embraces all the best characteristic of this iconic vintage, especially in terms of the crystalline authenticity of its varietal aromas. Luca Sanjust experimented with Spanish clay vessels and then went back to Tuscan terracotta amphorae made with clay from Impruneta (not far from Florence). This wine is light and luminous with mid-weight texture but a very long and silky finish. It is a true beauty." |
