Rocher Calon Montagne St Emilion

Rocher Calon Montagne St Emilion

Bordeaux Blend

Vintage: 2017
Description: This wine has won a Gold medal at the French "General Agriculture Contest" held in Paris this year (2014). It's 100% Merlot from the right bank of the Dordogne appellation Montagne Saint Emilion. The vines average 35 years of age, and the plantations are on soils that include many ancient fossils, indicating that they were once under an ocean. The calcium content of this type of soil seems to be ideal for growing interesting-tasting wines. After harvest, the grapes are cold-macerated for 4 days prior to fermentation (this helps in extracting color and flavor from the skins); the fermented wine is then aged 18 months in stainless steel and cement tanks (no wood). As a result we have a non-oaky wine with rich fruit that is dry and has fairly full body; it can be enjoyed now due to its excellent balance, but could also be aged up to 5 years to give it even more complexity that it has now. Enjoy this wine with aged cheeses, red meat dishes, steaks, and especially regional foods of Southwest France, such as duck, cassoulet and pates and terrines (foie gras, etc.)
