Description: | Halliday Wine Companion 97 Points - " An icon in Australian wine, Yalumbas Coonawarra-born Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon has long stood at the pointy end of our country's fine-wine pyramid, and Im sure many will fondly remember occasions when a well-cellared example of the Menzies has knocked their socks off. Nothings changed, perhaps the oak has been dialled back a little, but that classic, herbal-flecked blackberry and blackcurrant fruit at its core is all elegance and latent power. Fine spice and graphite-like tannins lay down layers on the palate. The finish is long and with impeccable balance, trailing off with a vapour trail of blackcurrant, cedar and olive tapenade. Its a classic." - Dave Brookes. Wine Advocate 95 Points - "The 2017 The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon is looking good next to the 2016 tasted beside it. It is fresh and vibrant, with layers of complexing dark earth characters, with cigar box, black olive brine, cassis, bramble, milk chocolate and cracked black pepper. This is very good, and it has what I am coming to recognize as a "Yalumba red character": dried herbs, particularly oregano. The juicy splay of fruit through the finish is a highlight.". Winery Notes - "Medium crimson with a crimson hue. Displaying true Coonawarra aromatics of ozone, violet and a lovely fresh burst of blueberries and choc mint. The palate is restrained yet complex. Whilst the wine is youthful and structural, there is blueberry, violet and chocolate with lovely fruit flavour and very fine tannins, giving the drinker an insight to the ageability of this wine. With decanting in its youth it is enjoyable as an elegant fullbodied red wine. Food Pairing: Wonderful with a chargrilled rib eye on the bone or porcini mushroom, thyme and quinoa risotto. The Menzies is in the heart of Coonawarra terra rossa country. The vineyard site is reasonably level, with the defining terroir difference coming from the soils. Our soil is red sandy loam over limestone, which is classic Cabernet Sauvignon dirt. Most of the vines for Yalumba The Menzies were planted in 1985 and are trellised tall with wide rows. Bunches are usually small with small berries giving a concentration that favours the creation of full bodied reds." |
