Description: | Tracey and John Skupny founded Lang & Reed Napa Valley in 1993 with the vision of crafting expressive and enjoyable wines, particularly focused on the unique qualities of Cabernet Franc. Their journey began in Kansas City, where they worked as sommeliers before moving to California in 1980 and settling in Napa Valley by 1984. They were captivated by the distinct aromatics and flavors of Cabernet Franc, inspired by its use in France's Loire Valley and Bordeaux. This fascination led to the creation of a 1993 prototype that embodied purity of flavor, balance, and structure, marking the birth of Lang & Reed Napa Valley. Named after their sons, J Reed and Jerzy Lang, the winery remains family-owned and operated, with nearly 40 years of wine industry experience shaping their approach. Winemaking, for the Skupnys, is the intersection of art and science, aiming to create wines that bring pleasure and showcase varietal authenticity. Their winemaking philosophy combines an open-minded, youthful approach with exacting attention to detail, producing wines praised for their balance and restraint. They work closely with grape growers to match the right clones with ideal soil and growing techniques, allowing the terroir to express itself in the wines. This meticulous approach is evident in their Cabernet Franc, sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Napa Valley, Alexander Valley, and Lake County. Expanding their search to Mendocino has allowed them to apply the same dedication to terroir and varietal expression in their Chenin Blanc, resulting in wines of substance, structure, and true varietal character. |
