Ch. Chauvin, St. Émilion - 2016
Description: | Château Chauvin consistently produces seductive, serious Merlot-dominant red wine from the Corbin plateau, which just borders Pomerol. The glory of this vintage is expressed in this concentrated Claret. Powerful plum, folded into currants and layered atop a tannic backbone, which is now only beginning to soften around the edges. Fine for the cellar, but easily enjoyed now after a good decant with a robust meal. During the 1500's, Chauvin started out life as part of the Corbin fiefdom of Corbin. For a time, Chateau Figeac, Cheval Blanc, and Chauvin were all joined together. The wine from all three Bordeaux wine vineyards was combined and sold under the name of Figeac. Victor Ondet, grandfather of the present owners, purchased the St. Emilion property in 1981. The 37 acre Bordeaux wine vineyard is planted with 75% Merlot vines, 20% Cabernet Franc and five % Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir is sand, with clay and iron under the surface. The average age of the vines is 30 years. This vintage boasts tannic and powerful, super-concentrated flavors. Dense and chewy, this vin-de-garde displays all of the hallmarks of a classic Claret. |
