As much as we love wines that pay homage to decades- and centuries-old customs, we also dig those that fly in the face of tradition and blaze a new trail. Up-and-coming wine regions, cutting-edge winemaking practices and unusual grape combinations can bring forth unique and delicious wines that quite often take us by pleasant surprise. With today's Three-Pack Special, the 2014 Hentley Farm "The Stray Mongrel", a splash of robust Zinfandel was added to the traditional blend of Shiraz and Grenache. The results are pretty spectacular. Check it out!. Hentley Farm was founded by Keith Hentschke, who selected the property for its soil. Planted to Shiraz (70%), Grenache (17%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), Zinfandel (2%), and Viognier (1%), the secret to Hentley Farm's success is its soil diversity and its winemaking teams' philosophy that great wines are made when they are the products of varied varietal and terroir combinations. The addition of Zinfandel to the traditional blend of Grenache and Shiraz is unique to Hentley Farm. With each varietal separately crushed, fermented and matured, "The Stray Mongrel" puts each grape's best attributes on display, giving the finished wine intensity, depth and complexity. The Grenache and Zinfandel vines are located on the eastern facing slope of the property. When founder Keith Hentschke purchased Hentley Farm, this block was a quarry, and today the shallow soil profile overlaying the quarry limestone reduces the natural vigor of the vine, allowing vibrancy and intensity to shine in the fruit (winemaker notes). The Shiraz is selected from an elevated block on the western side of the creek that gets excellent sun exposure. The wine spends 8 months in a combination of French and American seasoned oak, which adds character and weight to the finished wine without detracting from its ripe fruit. The 2014 Hentley Farm "The Stray Mongrel" offers aromatics of strawberries, raspberries and lavender. The full-bodied palate is redolent of raspberries and cassis, with accents of nutmeg, cinnamon, earth and woodsmoke. Supple tannins and vibrant avidity provide structure, and bright fruit characters reemerge on the long finish. James Halliday gave "The Stray Mongrel" 94 points:. "The 2014 Stray Mongrel is a bits and pieces 58/38/4% blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Zinfandel, picked and fermented separately. The red berry fruits of the Grenache and darker fruits of the Shiraz have come together very well, particularly with its fresh finish.". (March 2015). "The Stray Mongrel" is indeed a distinctively delicious wine that pairs well with unexpected Spring snowstorms and will easily transition to grilling and barbecue season. Pair it with steaks, roasts, chicken, pork chips and more. Cheers!. N Order To Expedite Your Order, Please Bring In A Copy Of Your Receipt For Pickup.
