Clos Lapeyre Jurancon Sec

Clos Lapeyre Jurancon Sec

Gros Manseng

Vintage: 2017
Description: It's difficult to choose a highlight from my purcha sing trip to France last February, but if I were forced to, it would likely be the visit to Clos Lapeyre in Jurancon. Here, in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains, one is hardly in France at all in the traditional sense. The language is different (Occitan), the food is unique (an amalgamation of French and Catalan cuisine) and the wines are, in a word, exotic. Stunning views and steep, precipitous hillsides can't quite become pedestrian, but are so encompassing one can get used to them. Even in winter, we were surrounding by lush greenery and flora. We visited three producers with an eye on importing one into the U.s., and while all made lovely wines, we had a clear victor after our third visit, which happened to be Lapeyre here. In Jurancon, there are two grapes primarily grown: Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng. As the names suggest, the former produces larger berries, while the latter's are smaller (thus with a higher skin to juice ratio). Clos Lapeyre's entry level Jurancon Sec (ask us about the upper tier wines as well!) is 100% vinified from the "Gros" variety. Despite often being called the "Riesling of the South," this version is anything but sweet. It showcases lithe acidity, electric energy, and fresh intensity, as much as any Sauvignon Blanc or Gruner Veltliner. That Riesling comparison it more to do with aromatics and its potential for great sweet wine than anything else. Lapeyre's Jurancon Sec is all about puckering sour lemon dryness and fleshy stone-fruited juiciness. It also remains an absolute steal! Food Pairings: Boquerones, Greek Salad with Fresh Feta, Pan-Seared Lemon Pepper Trout
