Blackbird "Contrarian" Napa Valley Proprietary Red

Other Red Wines from Napa Valley

Vintage: 2009
Description: 93 points Wine Enthusiast. Just beautiful to drink now, despite grippy tannins that give the ripe fruit an astringent mouthfeel. Based on Cabernet Franc, the wine's flavors are simply delicious, offering waves of cherries, blueberries, plums and currants. Plenty of new oak adds toasty vanilla. Those tannins suggest pairing this wine with rich foods, such as lamb, but you don't want to… (6/2012) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar. (41% cabernet franc, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 24% merlot; 4.03 pH): Bright red-ruby. Crushed blackberry, licorice and violet on the nose and palate. Denser than the Illustration and a bit less forthcoming today, offering a firm structure and serious tongue-dusting tannins. This very rich, long wine comes across as much more vibrant than its high pH would suggest. Impressive potential here. (5/2012) 91 points Connoisseurs Guide. Although we very much like this deep and sturdy young wine, its high recommendation comes with a warning, for while it is extraordinarily rich and wonderfully concentrated stuff with a wealth of fruit and lovely oak to spare, it is also quite tannic and requires real patience of any who would choose to buy it. It is a wine that requires upwards of a decade of age, but it has the structure and the remarkable fruity strength to guarantee years of life beyond that. (5/2012) Wine Spectator. Firm and graceful, with dried berry, tar, sage and tobacco leaf flavors, fading on the finish. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2020. 477 cases made. (Web only-2012).
