| Description: | Podere Le Boncie might be the very definition of a boutique winery. This organic estate is tiny, a little less than ten acres situated in the hills near San Felice in the southern part of the Chianti Classico zone. It's wholly organic, planted to obscure clones of indigenous Tuscan grapes. Helmed by owner-winemaker Giovanna Morganti, a woman dedicated to crafting miniscule quantities of her otherworldly Tuscan wines, Le Boncie makes only three wines: Le Trame, or "the intrigues"; and Cinque, for the five grape varietals the estate grows; and Chiesamonti, a cru wine from a vineyard of the same name. When Giovanna's grandfather gave her a small farm of olive groves in the 1980s, she chose to put her enologist training to use. Giovanna chose to plant her traditional Tuscan grapes super densely, ensuring that the yields would be naturally low, and she chose to rely on organic and biodynamic methods so that her wines would be pure, unmediated expressions of her unique terroir. Giovanna even ferments her wine in open-topped vats because she wants to honor the age-old Tuscan winemaking traditions. The resulting wines have amassed a cult following, and Giovanna sits among Italy's finest makers of natural wines. |
