Ramey Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

Ramey Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

Chardonnay

Vintage: 2014
Description: #38 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2016. 95 Pts - Antonio Galloni - Vinous. Pale, bright lemon-yellow. Complex nose hints at lemon, clove and minerals. Vinous and penetrating, with strong lemony acidity and a serious mineral spine giving the palate superb energy but keeping the wine tight in the early going. Finishes a bit phenolic, with terrific grip to support a slow evolution in bottle. This, too, needs time in the cellar. 94 Pts - Wine Spectator. Shows amazing vibrancy and purity of flavor, brimming with juicy, lemon-scented green apple, white peach and tangerine notes, enlivened by zesty acidity and a long, persistent aftertaste that maintains focus and depth. Drink now through 2020. 1,250 cases made. 93 Pts - Wine Advocate. From a famous terroir comes the 2013 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard, which was planted in 1972 and possesses some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in Northern California. The wine has lemon custard notes intermixed with orange marmalade and honeysuckle in a medium to full-bodied, refreshing style. Drink now-2020. Under the Ramey label, David Ramey has always done a top-notch job with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Syrah, although he rarely gets enough credit for the latter. There are two generic Chardonnay offerings. Wine maker notes Situated directly in the center of the Russian River appellation, our block of Ken Ritchie's vineyard was planted in 1972 to the Old Wente selection. Widely spaced - the fashion at the time - these old vines, with their thick gnarly trucks, produce only a tiny quantity of grapes per vine. The bench land soil is pure Goldridge loam, common to great vineyards in the in this part of the Russian River Valley. Like the wine from Hyde and the Hudson Vineyard, this wine is able to absorb more oak without being overwhelmed, and sees about seventy percent new Burgundian barrels. It spends about twenty-one months in barrel, completely sur lies, before being bottled without filtration. The 2002 vintage is our first release of this wine, of which we produced a small quantity - 323 cases. Producer Ramey Wine Cellars is dedicated to creating high quality, handcrafted wines with balance and richness from the area's finest vineyards. Our philosophy is our process: It's about respect for the land. Nature guides our process and we listen - closely. It's about terroir. The vineyards are selected for their ability to sustainably produce the highest quality fruit. The soil must be right for the climate, which must be right for the terrain, which must be right for the varietal. It's about harmony - the marriage of Old World methods with New World innovations. It's about a family of wines crafted for the now, but even better with age. Bold, but in check, sensual, these are wines in perfect balance. Ramey Wine Cellars. Guided by passion and a commitment to goodness in the glass.
