This is a classic 'cuvée ronde', combining fruit from six different Premiers Crus to produce a stylish example of what Véronique Drouhin calls the 'cashmere of Burgundy'. Scented, balanced and ethereal, it's a transparent expression of Chambolle's range of terroirs, with sweet summer berry flavours and fine, velvety tannins. Accomplished stuff.Drinking Window 2023 - 2032 Tim Atkin - Decanter. Dried-strawberry and black-cherry aromas with hints of dried cherries and orange blossom. It's full-bodied with round, integrated and fine tannins. Tight and reserved on the finish. Drink after 2023. James Suckling. A bright deep purple with crimson edge. First impressions were not so good, the bouquet being a little bit smudged, and the fruit slightly cooked and dry at the finish. Then, all change with air in the glass. The fruit freshens up and finishes very well. Cleaner and perfumed at the end. Drink from 2026. Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy. The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an attractive nose of dark berry fruit, sous-bois and light seaweed scents, though I would have liked a little more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, touches of brown spice and white pepper, quite savoury towards the finish that gains some clarity with 10 minutes aeration. One of the appellation's earlier drinking propositions, yet it unfolds nicely and maybe has something up its sleeve? Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. - Neal Martin, Vinous Media. More evident wood can be found on the spicy poached plum, cassis and violet-suffused nose. The sleek, supple and attractively detailed medium weight flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the lingering finish that immediately firms up as it sits on the palate. This is already excellent and potentially outstanding. Sweet Spot – Outstanding – Allen Meadows - Burghound. The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is also promising, exhibiting aromas of rich berry fruit, dark chocolate and creamy new oak. It's medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, with an ample core of sweet fruit, ripe acids and melting tannins. This sample showed slight signs of fatigue, so I suspect that the final cuvée may make my score seem conservative. William Kelley – The Wine Advocate |
