| Description: | Feuerheerd's was founded in 1815 by the German trader Dietrich Matthias Feuerheerd who established his business in Oporto. In 1926 the company was sold to the Barros family and in 2007 to Quinta D. Matilde – Vinhos, Lda which is owned by some members of the Barros family. Feuerheerd's became famous over the years for the quality of its wines, especially its Vintage Port. Today, the brand was acquired by Barão de Vilar-Vinhos, Sa, giving birth to a new partnership between the van Zellers and the Barros family, determined to revive the long tradition of quality of Feuerheerd's wines. We tasted and loved this Feuerheerd's Douro Tinto Reserva during a comprehensive tasting of Portughese wine that we conducted to expand our selection at the Bottle Shop. This Douro Red is a classic dry red aged in previously used Port barrels, giving the wine a hint of Port flavor on the finish. On the forefront of the palate we found bing cherry, woodland berries and earthy, mocha notes wrapped in a rich, plush style. Made of local sustainably farmed grapes : Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, t hese grapes were hand harvested from vineyards up to 600m in elevation. Vineyards have both north and south facing aspects with varying sun exposure with s chist soils that are low in nutrients forcing the grapes to dig deep. Grapes are destemmed and fermented with skin contact. Fermentation lasts 2 weeks in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures. The grapes are pressed after fermentation in traditional vertical presses. Malolactic fermentation is spontaneous. The w ine is aged between 9-12 months in port barrels of 2,500-5,000 Liters previously used for Ruby style Ports, and 550 Liter barrels previously used for Reserva Tawny Port with an average age of 10 years.
