Louis Latour Chateau Corton Grancey Grand Cru 375 ml

Louis Latour Chateau Corton Grancey Grand Cru 375 ml

From Cote de Beaune

Vintage: 2005
Description: From The Vintage You've All Been Waiting For!. "The Latour flagship 2005 Corton Chateau Corton Grancey offers both aromatically and on the palate a wealth of mineral characteristics: chalk, brine, wet stone and a distinctly alkaline overall cast. Expansive, black cherry fruit (as well as cherry pits) and underlying meatiness emerge more prominently in the finish. There is some depth of flavor, although the wine's personality – two weeks before it was due to be bottled – remained relatively austere. Louis-Fabrice Latour and oenologue Jean-Charles Thomas garner frequent praise for their white wines but have drawn some criticism for their Pinots, particularly directed at their practice of flash pasteurization. I have no problem with Latour's avowed adherence to "the school of finesse," but some of the reds from 2005 simply lacked the requisite clarity or concentration to be distinctive. That said, there are certainly a number of reds this year – wines Latour began bottling less than eleven months after harvest – that are well worth recommending." (wa). "Producer note: Louis-Fabrice Latour and winemaker Jean-Pierre Thomas (Jean-Pierre Jobard has now retired) told me that 2005 is a "great vintage in red and an excellent vintage in white. It's truly a classic vintage for the reds but, at least here at Maison Latour, not necessarily greater than 1990 or 1999. It's really an old style vintage that really seems to recall some of the legendary vintage from decades gone by. Unfortunately, we had at best average yields and in some cases well below average. We had no sorting losses to speak of though with good sugars and whenever you have no disease or rot pressures and chaptalization is zero or minimal, you generally make pretty good wines. Overall, it is a dream vintage and the wines should age beautifully.". Tasting note: A very subtle touch of wood frames a spicy red berry fruit nose that dissolves into rich, full, well-muscled and sweet flavors that possess a good deal more volume and while the mid-palate is supple and round, the finish has the firmness that one expects from a big Corton. There is much better balance here and this should age well." (bh)
