A true pioneer of the Super Tuscan movement, Tenuta San Guido broke the rules governing Tuscan winemaking by making a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in Bolgheri. Initially shunned by Italian authorities, they were forced to label their wine simply as vino da tavola (table wine). The quality was undeniable and Sassicaia was finally awarded DOC status. In fact, it remains the only wine from a single estate in Italy to have its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia Doc. Le Difese is a fresh and approachable wine which shares the family traits, that make Sassicaia so famous. It displays delicious purity of fruit and a richness, which belies its price point. For those making case purchases, it will be hard to resist drinking all of your bottles in the short term as this wine is drinking beautifully now. For those with patience, this wine can be enjoyed over the next 5 years or so. |
