Berroia Bizkaiko Txakolina

Berroia Bizkaiko Txakolina

Hondarrabi Zuri

Vintage: 2018
Description: Bodegas Berroja was founded in 2001 by Jose Angel Carrero. Berroia is an estate bottled wine produced in Chacoli de Bizcaia, an appellation in the Basque region of Spain. Work on the vineyards began in 1995 by clearing the existing forests and preparing the land for planting vines. The 37 acres of vineyards are ideally situated on a steep 12% slope. This aspect offers excellent drainage as the region averages nearly 60" of rainfall per year. The high levels of rain prevent most varietals from growing, but the main varietal of the region Hondarribi (Zuri for white and Beltza for red wines), does not grow anywhere else. Soils are composed of limestone on the surface with sand subsoil containing low to medium amounts of organic matter. Additional amounts of Folle Blanche and Riesling are grown to add complexity to the final blends. Berroja focuses on making wines that best reflect the terroir, producing approachable and sensibly priced wines. Producer Bodegas Berroja was founded in 2001 by Jose Angel Carrero. Berroia is an estate bottled wine produced from vineyards located in the Chacoli de Bizcaia appellation of Basque, Spain. The high levels of rain in the region are detrimental to most varietals, which is why the estate is planted with indigenous varietals, Hondarribi Zuri for white and Beltza for red, with a little bit of Folle Blanche and Riesling. All 37 acres are planted to sand with limestone topsoils on a steep 12% slope which is critical for proper drainage. These terroir-driven wines are crafted to provide immediate everyday enjoyment.
